WALDORF ASTORIA

The Waldorf-Astoria was built in 1893 by William Waldorf Astor.  Dozens of the rooms and halls were at the disposal of the general public, including the Turkish Salon where coffee was served by a genuine Turk and a boy assistant.  The old Waldorf-Astoria met its end and was demolished in 1929 when the builders of the future Empire State Building bought the entire block.
