VANDERBILT HOUSES

By 1880, the Vanderbilt fortune was the greatest ever amassed in America.

William Henry Vanderbilt had two great houses built for him on Fifth Avenue from 51st to 52nd Streets.  The twin houses were divided by an atrium that separated the W.H. Vanderbilt residence from that of his two sons-in-laws.  It was said that $15,000,000 was expended on the building, decoration and furnishing of the Vanderbilt houses.  The William K. Vanderbilt house was demolished in 1925, and the twin houses vanished in 1947.
